What you should look for in an eye cream.

Recently there has been a surge in advertisements showing products that remove the bags from under the eyes in a matter of minutes.  These time lapse videos look incredible and the results seem almost to hard to believe.  Like most "Get Rich Quick Schemes" if it looks to good to be true it most likely is.  The same is true for these magic eye creams.

The amazing results you see in these videos is not magic.  It really does happen, but it happens for the wrong reasons. The ingredients used in these under eye creams are designed to dehydrate the skin and remove water to reduce the puffiness. As a quick fix these products work. But the results disappear almost overnight. The long term benefits are non-existent. In fact, some could argue that removing water from the skin is the opposite of what we have always been taught about our skin.

As we age our skin loses moisture, collagen and elasticity that causes the sagging, fine lines and wrinkles. For long term benefits a good eye cream needs to include ingredients that will both hydrate and help to rebuild the collagen in our skin to prevent the sagging and fine lines. Here are a few key ingredients you should look for in a quality face and eye cream.

Hyaluronic Acid
The moisture in our skin can drop significantly as we age. The loss of moisture causes the skin to lose elasticity which exposes the signs of aging. Hyaluronic acid (HA) has the unique ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This provides the skin the moisture it needs and locks it in to keep your skin looking fresh.  Hyaluronic acid is a major component of skin that helps to repair and protect skin tissue. When applied topically, HA creates protective barrier on the skin that locks in moisture and gives the skin a more youthful appearance. Hyaluronic Acid can also help protect the skin from the suns Harmful UVB rays which can cause sun spots.

Retinol (Vitamin A)
Retinol is one of the most studied ingredients in fighting skin aging. Retinol and its derivatives have been shown to have the ability to stimulate collagen production and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  It is known to be one of the most powerful ingredients for rejuvenation of the skin.

Vitamins C & E
Vitamins C and E are also potent ant-aging ingredients. While vitamin C aids in collagen production and skin elasticity, vitamin E soothes and protects. Both are well known for having anti-oxidant properties designed to fight free radicals that can damage skin cells.

What Else Should You Look For In An Eye Cream?

Finding an eye cream that contains these beneficial ingredients and more can be a bit confusing since there are so many on the market these days.  One thing that can make a cream stand out above the others is its ability to source these active ingredients for natural sources.
